August 31, 2017 - If you are passionate about education, you should consider running for your local school board and be a leader in your community. 

The Parkland School Division 2017 School Board Election Handbook provides information about Election 2017 along with an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a School Board Trustee, wards, school year calendars and board and committee meetings. 

Parkland School Division has partnered with Parkland County to conduct the 2017 election. Parkland County’s Elections webpage provides information, links to election forms and documents and updates for candidates.

Nomination Requirements

Nomination Day is Monday, September 18, 2017.

For all wards of Parkland School Division in Parkland County, Town of Stony Plain and City of Spruce Grove, nomination papers are only received by the Returning Officer between 10am and noon on Monday, September 18 in the Parkland County Administration Building (53109A Hwy 779, Parkland County).

The Nomination Paper and Candidate’s Acceptance Form can be accessed on the Parkland County Elections page. Every nomination must be accompanied by a cash deposit of $100.00 (personal cheques will not be accepted).

To be nominated as a candidate in the school board election under the Local Authorities Election Act, a person must be eligible under section 21 of the Local Authorities Election Act and section 44(4) of the School Act (if applicable) to be elected to the office, and not otherwise disqualified under section 22 or 23 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

Advance vote will be held on the following dates for Parkland County, the City of Spruce Grove and the Town of Stony Plain:

  • Thursday, October 5, 11am-3pm
  • Tuesday, October 10, 4-8pm
  • Thursday, October 12, 4-8pm

Voting Requirements

In accordance with Section 47 of the Local Authorities Election Act, a person must:

  1. be a least 18 years old,
  2. be a Canadian citizen, and
  3. have resided in Alberta for the 6 consecutive months immediately preceding election day and the person’s place of residence is located in the area on election day.

In accordance with Section 44 of the School Act, where a separate school district is established, an individual residing within the boundaries of the separate school district who is of the same faith as those who established that district, whether Protestant or Roman Catholic, (a) is a resident of the separate school district, and (b) is not a resident of the public school district.
